Treat approval as the start of another sequence
Chile's Estampado Electrónico, often abbreviated EE, is an important document in the temporary residence process. Receiving a favorable decision does not mean every subsequent task is complete. SERMIG publishes separate instructions for the electronic stamp, including how its handling differs when residence was requested abroad or inside Chile. Begin by reading the actual decision and the current official guidance together. Record the date of notification and identify what action is required next. Avoid treating a congratulatory message from an adviser as a substitute for the official documents. The applicant needs to understand the deadlines, personal details, and conditions that govern the move after approval.
Count the correct kind of days
For permission granted abroad, SERMIG's stamp guidance states a period of 120 working days from notification to download the EE, followed by ninety calendar days to enter Chile. Working days and calendar days are not interchangeable. Put each deadline on a calendar with the event that starts it and verify the calculation using the current instructions. Do not count from the date you happened to read the email if the legal notification occurred earlier. If there is uncertainty or a technical obstacle, seek assistance promptly and preserve the relevant records. A missed administrative step can be more disruptive than a long processing period because it occurs after relocation plans have become concrete.
Check identity details before using the document
Compare the EE with the passport, application, and decision. Look at names, date of birth, nationality, document number, and other identifying information. SERMIG identifies a correction procedure and an opportunity to request rectification before download in the relevant process. Use the proper channel if an error appears; do not edit the electronic document yourself. If a passport was renewed during review, determine how to update or connect the records before traveling. A small mismatch may create practical difficulties with boarding, entry, or identity documentation. Resolving it while there is time is preferable to asking several later agencies to overlook the same inconsistency.
Plan travel around the actual entry window
Once the relevant electronic document is available, arrange travel within the stated period and allow for ordinary disruption. Check transit requirements for every country in the itinerary and ensure the passport remains suitable for travel. Keep the EE and decision accessible offline, with secure backups. If dependants have separate approvals, verify their own timelines rather than applying the principal applicant's date to everyone. Avoid assuming that a booked flight extends a government deadline if the flight is canceled. If the window becomes difficult to meet, contact the responsible authority about lawful options before it expires, presenting the actual dates and supporting evidence.
Understand when residence becomes effective
SERMIG's guidance distinguishes the commencement of residence granted abroad from the handling of a permission granted in Chile. For an overseas approval, entry is a key event in the residence timeline. Preserve the relevant entry evidence and record the date accurately. For a domestic approval, follow the current electronic stamp and payment instructions stated by the authority. Do not derive the start date simply from the day the application was submitted. That date can affect later administrative tasks and future applications. A chronological file should show notification, download or delivery, payment where applicable, entry, and the resulting period of residence as separate events.
Arrange the identity card appointment
SERMIG instructs people with residence granted abroad to request their Chilean identity card appointment within thirty days after entry, and gives a corresponding thirty day rule linked to download for the domestic situation described in its guidance. Confirm the instruction applicable to your case and use the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación's official booking process. Save proof that the appointment was requested. Do not confuse the deadline to request an appointment with an assumption about when the card will physically be issued. Prepare the required records and plan attendance around work, school, and travel. Identity documentation is a practical part of settling in, not an optional task to leave until convenient.
Avoid obsolete procedural assumptions
Immigration procedures change, and older personal accounts may describe steps that no longer apply to a newly granted permission. SERMIG's current EE guidance states that temporary residence permissions granted after the identified February 2022 cutoff do not need the old PDI registration step for identity card processing. Check the current instructions rather than reproducing an outdated checklist from a friend. At the same time, do not generalize one change into a claim that no other registration or documentation duties exist. Use the official decision and service pages to identify the exact tasks for your category, keeping evidence that each required action was completed.
Preserve the stamp as part of the full file
Store the EE with the residence decision, passport record, entry evidence, identity card appointment, and final identity document. Keep the original electronic file rather than only a cropped screenshot. If an employer or institution needs proof, provide the appropriate document securely and retain your own copy. Read the category's conditions before assuming the stamp permits every kind of work or study. When renewal or a status change approaches, this organized file will show what was granted and when it took effect. The purpose of the postapproval process is to connect the legal decision to lawful entry and usable identification, with a clear record of each step.
