Identify why recognition is needed

A person moving to Greece may need a foreign degree assessed for a particular academic or administrative purpose. Greece's official National Registry of Administrative Public Services describes the procedure for recognition of foreign first-cycle qualifications through DOATAP. The important first question is what the receiving institution actually requires. University admission, employment, professional licensing and immigration are related in some cases, but they should not be assumed to involve one universal recognition decision.

Ask the university, employer or competent authority to identify the required assessment in writing. A general request for a recognised degree may need clarification before an application is started. If the intended occupation is regulated, check the professional route separately. An academic-recognition record should not be presented as a residence permit or as automatic permission to practise every profession. Establishing the purpose early helps avoid paying for a process that does not address the decision the applicant needs.

Use DOATAP’s current official resources

DOATAP's official website provides access to its electronic application service, registries, frequently asked questions and information on the course of an application. These resources help an applicant understand the assessment framework before uploading documents. The National Registry's first-cycle procedure directs applicants to the e-DOATAP platform and explains that they can follow application history and progress there. Use the current instructions for the relevant level of qualification rather than assuming that every credential follows the undergraduate procedure.

Read the official material with the actual education history in front of you. Identify the awarding institution, teaching institution if different, programme title and study dates. International campuses, transferred credits and distance learning can make those details less straightforward than the name printed on the diploma suggests. An applicant should describe the history accurately and ask the competent service about any uncertainty, instead of selecting whichever simplified description seems likely to make the form easier to complete.

Assemble the academic evidence in context

A degree certificate alone may not explain the full course of study. Review the official document list for transcripts, study details or other evidence relevant to the individual case. The National Registry's description includes requirements relating to the study-mode certificate and its language treatment. Obtain records from the appropriate institution and ensure that they identify the student consistently. Where an institution has merged, closed or changed its name, establish how an official record can be obtained or verified.

Create a chronology of the programme, including transfers, interruptions or studies at another institution. Link each period to the relevant record. This chronology is a preparation aid, not a substitute for the prescribed documents. Its value is that it helps the applicant notice gaps before submission. If a transcript omits a transferred year or uses a different name, address the discrepancy with the issuer rather than expecting the Greek assessor to reconstruct the missing explanation from unrelated documents.

Check authentication and translation requirements

The official procedure describes formal requirements for foreign documents, including authentication and acceptable translation arrangements in relevant cases. These requirements depend on the document and language, so read the detailed instructions before ordering services. A translation completed for a different country's university application may not have the formal status required here. Equally, do not assume that every English-language document needs the same treatment as a record in another language without checking the actual rule.

Prepare the final correct version of a document before arranging authentication or translation. Keep all pages, relevant seals and annotations together. A translator should represent the original record faithfully rather than inserting an unofficial Greek degree equivalent or silently correcting an issuer's error. If a name discrepancy requires explanation, provide it through the appropriate supporting record. The aim is a traceable document chain in which the original, formal certification and translated version clearly refer to the same qualification.

Manage the electronic application as a record

When using e-DOATAP, select the procedure that matches the qualification and intended assessment. Review each upload for completeness and legibility, and save the submission confirmation. A draft stored in an account should not be confused with a completed application. Keep copies of the versions actually submitted, because later corrections or requests should be answered against that record rather than against an applicant's memory of what was intended to be uploaded.

Monitor the official communication channel and respond to requests through the instructed process. If the authority seeks information directly from an institution, coordinate with the institution without altering or substituting its response. Record important reference numbers and dates. Published indicative processing information can help planning, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed completion date for employment or enrolment. Where a receiving institution has a deadline, explain the actual application stage and ask what evidence of pending assessment it can accept.

Use the outcome for its stated purpose

Once a decision is issued, read the complete outcome and any conditions or further steps. DOATAP's site includes information about reevaluation and other services, which may be relevant where an applicant needs to understand the available procedure after a decision. Preserve the decision with the academic evidence, but do not describe it more broadly than its wording allows. A receiving body may still need to assess separate admission, employment or professional requirements.

Keep immigration planning on its own timetable. A recognition application does not automatically extend a visa or residence permission while it is pending. If the degree assessment supports an intended move, coordinate the relevant processes without confusing their legal effects. The useful approach is to establish the purpose, select the correct official procedure, document the education history accurately and follow the electronic record through to an outcome. That gives both the applicant and the receiving Greek institution a clearer basis for the next decision.
