A points calculation is only part of eligibility

South Africa introduced published points-based criteria for general and critical-skills work visas through an October 2024 government notice. The notice makes clear that applicants must also satisfy the other prescribed requirements. A score should therefore be treated as one component of an application, not as a self-issued approval. Before calculating points, identify the current rules that apply to the application and whether any transitional or special arrangements are relevant. Use the official notice and implementation guidance, together with the responsible mission's current instructions, rather than a calculator that does not explain its assumptions.

Identify the occupation from actual duties

A job title can vary between employers and countries. Compare the duties and qualifications of the proposed role with the relevant official occupation information instead of assuming that a familiar title is enough. Ask the employer for a precise description of responsibilities, reporting lines and required expertise. If professional registration or qualification evaluation is relevant, investigate the correct authority and evidence early. The applicant should be able to explain why the role fits the claimed category using real employment facts. Renaming a position to resemble an occupation on a list does not resolve a substantive mismatch between the job and the requirements.

Create an evidence column beside every claimed factor

A useful personal worksheet has three columns: the factor being claimed, the evidence supporting it and the question still unresolved. For experience, this might involve employment records describing duties and dates. For qualifications, it may involve certificates and any required evaluation. For remuneration, the relevant contract and pay evidence should use the measure required by the current rules. Do not count a factor simply because it appears plausible. The worksheet is a preparation aid, not an official assessment. Its value is that it exposes gaps before the application is submitted and helps an adviser focus on the points that actually need verification. Keep the worksheet dated and revise it when the offer or supporting evidence changes. An earlier calculation should not remain in circulation as if it described the current application after important facts have been amended.

Read the transitional guidance if the case is older

DHA's implementation directive discusses applications and appointments that predate the introduction of the system, as well as specified special circumstances. An applicant with an older pending case should not automatically replace the original legal framework with the latest points calculation. Establish the actual submission and appointment dates and preserve the relevant records. Ask a qualified adviser how the directive applies to the particular file. The useful question is which rules govern this application, not which set of rules looks most favourable in isolation. Mixing evidence standards from different periods can create confusion about what the applicant is required to demonstrate.

Coordinate the employer’s documents with the worker’s

The employment offer and the worker's personal evidence should describe the same role. Compare the title, duties, location, salary and expected start date across the contract, employer letters and application. If the company changes the offer during preparation, update the relevant documents rather than leaving contradictory versions in the file. Clarify who is responsible for each employer-side requirement and give that person enough time to obtain signatures or records. A recruitment deadline should not force the applicant to submit an inaccurate package. It is better to identify a missing employer document before filing than to discover later that the application rested on an assumption nobody had verified.

Do not overlook ordinary application requirements

The government notice explicitly says that other prescribed requirements remain relevant. Identity records, health or character documentation and other required evidence should therefore be managed alongside the points analysis. Use the current official checklist for the application location and circumstances. Track document validity and any translation or authentication steps. A strong occupational profile does not make an incomplete form or missing prescribed record irrelevant. At the same time, avoid collecting unnecessary sensitive documents simply because another applicant used them. The correct evidence package is the one required for the actual route and case, assembled clearly and truthfully.

Treat the start date as conditional until permission is established

A job offer can be genuine while the immigration timetable remains uncertain. Discuss with the employer how the start date will be handled if the decision takes longer than expected. Avoid assuming that the application, points score or appointment receipt authorises work. Preserve the final permission and read its conditions before beginning employment. If the role changes after approval, investigate whether further action is required. A hypothetical specialist hired from abroad should coordinate notice to the previous employer, relocation and housing with the immigration outcome rather than make every commitment depend on an estimated processing period.

Use the score to organise a stronger factual case

The practical benefit of a points framework is that it can make parts of the assessment easier to organise. Use that structure to test the evidence, not to oversell certainty. Confirm the current criteria, identify the correct occupation, substantiate each claimed factor and complete the remaining requirements. Where a professional adviser assists, ask for an explanation of the assumptions and unresolved issues rather than only a total score. A coherent application connects the worker's qualifications, the employer's genuine role and the governing rules. That is more useful than a high number generated by a tool that has never checked the underlying documents.
